Each day we focused on one type of food, starting with grains. We couldn’t do the recommended corn name activity (bc of allergies), but enjoyed lots of fun with rice, noodles and oats in sensory bins and found ways to include all food groups between 2 slices of bread in a healthy sandwich.

Using a combination of MGT and other curriculums offers the opportunity for older and younger students to work together, but at their own pace.  While younger children practice counting fish on “protein” day, middle stages discuss what foods belong in the protein group and older kids learn how protein benefits their muscles.

creating number recognition and adding games to expand on MGT materials

The laughing started when I announced that this weeks theme was “Backyard Safari.”  An observation that “it’s a blizzard outside” meant our backyard safari would be indoors.  Schools were closed due to the icy roads and blowing snow conditions, so some of our students couldn’t make it to child care or tutor time sessions.  Students in attendance discussed last weeks topic of the “grass is greener on the other side” and how it would take a lot of digging to see if the grass was green, brown or if it had vanished under our snowbanks.

The first daily topic included in this weeks Mother Goose Time curriculum was about grass, so we had to skip the grass investigation activity, but doing so led to great discussion of world wide weather and seasonal changes. Mother Goose Time provides individual day packs for each topic making lesson planning easy.  We utilize their topics in our overall theme and integrate other curriculums to simplify or extend subject matters for the different ages and learning stages of our 1-12 year old students.

water day lesson planning

One aspect I love about the MGT kit is that you can use the daily bags in whatever order you prefer – in fact, because the kits are not predated and the calendars are blank, you can use the materials any time, any month you’d like! We’ve enjoyed this current theme as it has made a cold month feel a bit warmer when your learning about sunny safari lands! Although we used most of this months theme as suggested, we did activities a bit out of order this week.  Instead of moving from grass to birds, we transitioned from grass to the bugs and other things on the ground, then discussed the things that grow up from the ground – like the trees.

water life and water-hole math

What makes the grass and trees grow? Water. What else needs water to survive? What types of water ways are there? How is the water cycle affected in different lands that experience different weather patterns.  We transitioned through the daily themes as the children’s interests, questions and knowledge transitioned. From the beetles on the ground to the birds in the sky… from creatures that live in on land, in trees, in water …. we used all the materials MGT supplied and learned beyond the daily scopes by allowing students to lead discussions and investigate the world beyond our backyard.

In our current yard there’s not much to investigate beyond snow! Noticing much of our wildlife is hibernating or has migrated to warmer places led to lessons on animal habitats and what animals would be the same and different from those we’d see across the globe. Lessons on how some of our local animals adapt to survive the winter led to an interest in what kinds of foods they store in their shelters, and meal plans for animals around the world. What about the different types of meal plans people make in other lands – or our neighbors who come from a different background and culture than us?

Greener Grasslands

“Their grass might be greener, but our grass has snow on top so we can sled.” This was one response to asking what students thought when they heard the grass is greener phrase.  I love how many children chose to look at the positive aspects of the situation, while most of the adults around them are complaining about the snow and cold that comes with winters in Michigan.  Our green grass will return in a few months, until then we’ll enjoy sledding and other fun winter sports, then head inside for some cocoa and warm thoughts about warm places.

bead patterns, shapes, colors … from Mother Goose Time

This month we’ve been on an African Adventure at Adventure Academy.  We’ve prepared for Safari, observed the animals, and now learned about “Life in the Grasslands” with help from Mother Goose Time.  Although we utilize many curriculums for our tots to teen students this program is the one that can be simplified or extended to meet the most needs and interests of a mulit-age classroom.  From english to mathematics we adapt lessons to reinforce basic skills and introduce new concepts.  From science to social studies our students are engaged in understanding their own community while learning about lands far away and appreciating diverse cultures.

small motor skill builder

While learning about diverse cultures children discover the curiosity to travel and engage with new people.  Often one becomes grateful for the traditions and lifestyles in their own homes.  Older students who researched the lifestyles in various African societies discussed how blessed they are to live without having to carry a bucket of water on their heads to have some water closer to home! This topic also led to the discussion of human needs and rights as the Flint water crisis unfolded downstate.  Integrating the theme meant while older students continued comparing and contrasting local and world news, younger students enjoyed the visuals and stories of far off lands.

bead fun continued for a LONG time

Integrating the lessons for diverse ages meant older students worked on patterns with meaning for their Maasai bracelets, while younger students worked on their small motor skills and noted bead colors and shapes.  We thought of reasons for the bracelets such as jewelry during a celebration or as a gift for another during a holiday.  We talked about the difference of buying vs making vs doing gifts for another.  In doing a gift for another do we expect payment? Should our chores be for payment or as a volunteer in appreciation?  These are questions even the youngest of students answered.

MGT story telling sets

What if you lived in an African hut?  What type of chores would be different than in your own home?  What kind of celebrations would you host if you lived there?  Who would come celebrate with you?  While inventing a story with a “storytelling set”  we decided we could not invite the animals as most were too big, too wild, or would eat the guests.  What if you were watching an elephant migration from your window and noticed they were tired and hungry, should you help?  The conversations of helping others and helping animals showed the caring nature of the children in our program.

some Migration activities

Often these conversations were started with a teacher directed question, but continued on while the teacher only observed, listened and answered questions that meant first looking up the correct response.  From using the books in our resource library to searching the internet children discovered that no one has all the answers, but most everything can be answered.  Children love learning.  They are curious and want answers and by simply providing the answers we’re not encouraging their curiosity.  Sometimes Adventure Academy gets a bit off the lesson plan, as we let the learning process take over.  When we get back on track we find we learned so much more than the original objective and we learned by increasing our problem solving skills.

music fun

While problem solving an issued making instruments we learned about other things that create music, we learned about rhythm and beat, we learned about the music animals create and how they too sing and dance.  We learned about the sounds animals make to communicate feelings of celebration, happiness, sadness, being scared … “What noise would you make if you were about to become a lions dinner” was just one question a student asked.  That answer was loud!!! The loud response quieted down the food chain as we learned about who ate what and when – and why.  The circle of life was a sad topic for some so understanding the reasons helped with acceptance of why the lion was the king of the jungle in Africa and why the cute lil’ bunny would be eaten locally.

We utilized the “Wild Safari Animals” unit from Mother Goose Time in combination with random animal toys, manipulatives, puzzles, books, etc from our own resource library.  Safari animal studies led to comparisons of animals across the globe.  While little ones separated land, water and sky animals, older students studied creature habitats and survival skills.

MGT circle time display & continent dice game

The sounds of music have changed to the sounds of animals as we explore the safari at Adventure Academy.  As we transitioned into winter we discussed how our local animals used migration, hibernation or adaptation to survive the weather in Northern Michigan.  This led to discussions of how different lands are homes for different kinds of animals.  Learning about what animals lived in Africa seemed like a warm idea, so we were excited that Mother Goose Time offered the “Going on Safari” curriculum for this months adventure.

making our passport books

We always transition into new themes slowly allowing children to exhaust their questions on the current topic while building up curiosity for the next. Our winter unit had a timely end with the new year and discussions of seasons turned to lessons of calendars.  Lessons of years turned to months into weeks to days to hours in a day …to creation of a day, of time, of the world and the animals on it…  to dreaming of trips around the world to visit animals we don’t see in our own backyard.

decorating our safari hats

We spent A LOT of time looking at maps and creating maps and making passports.  We talked about what we would pack for such adventures and loved the idea that going on a safari meant we could leave the snow-suits at home! We would need to pack a camera to document the trip of course and used our animal picture cards for pretend photos as well as matching games. We used our theme poster as a location map and decided we should use our binoculars to observe the lions instead of approaching them.

animal matching

From playing with animal figures, to writing in our journals about our trip, the children enjoyed the expedition and came daily eager to participate.  Well some kids came daily, but some of our students come once a week or 2 or 3 x’s a week, or just mornings.  Some find allowing a flexible schedule makes lesson planning to difficult, but I enjoy the dynamic it creates with different ages and stages throughout the week. One benefit to the scheduling is that it requires us re-cap what we learned on previous days and encourages materials to be left out for later interaction.

No matter the scheduling the routine stays the same.  Although children arrive and depart at different times they know our typical schedule after just a couple days of attending.  Those who arrive early find quiet options such as manipulatives to interact with until breakfast.  After teeth brushing children have free time in our “Imagination stations” – kitchen, blocks, etc… We have a countdown system until clean up time then meet together for our circle time activities (calendar, weather, theme stories/songs…).  We use the theme in a craft, game or other learning activity before heading outdoors to play.

After outdoor adventures I offer sensory stations or other activities while I prepare lunch, then we read a story and do some literacy-links (speech/language/writing activities).  Little ones rest while older kids work on various electives (I have 1-10 year olds throughout the week).  Towards the end of quiet time we have math moment options available until all kids are up and their energy is re-booted.  Then we have snacks and more playtime.  Depending on the day and how late children are in attendance we may do another “Brain builder” activity (STEM, social studies, etc…) before dinner is served.

looking for animals

Sometimes children are in attendance 7 days a week, since I offer the services from the home it’s open as long as I’m here and available!!! No matter the day the schedule is the same to keep the routine predicable for our guests. If it is only my children at home our system goes out the window! We homeschool and since there is a lot of extra kids around, plenty of structure and many extra curriculars and programs they are involved in we take the day “off” even if it’s a random Thursday.  Off days still mean you read though.  We read every day so my boys love that each month a new book comes in our Mother Goose Time box.

separating animal types

Reading is a real struggle for some kids, especially those with various labels, but I found that encouraging them to read to a friend (especially if that friend is a cuddly 1 year old) the are very excited to “be teacher.” Reading use to be something we would encourage with offering screen time rewards for doing, yet today one child has challenged himself to read a whole chapter book while we’re stuck inside during a snow storm.  Another child has decided to take this months MGT book about African animals and create a tale about such animals in a winter wonderland.  The poor lion who’s tail is frozen and roars but noone can hear him over the winter winds…

Winter Sounds Like

The kids at Adventure Academy used their senses all month long and discovered “Sights and Sounds of Winter,” using the Mother Goose Time curriculum!

Here’s a short video of some of the fun we had with the sounds of music:

Discussing music sounds led to listening to all sorts of sounds and making lots of animal sounds … which will lead us nicely into our next theme! Click SUBSCRIBE  to be kept up to date on our animal adventures and other explorations throughout the new year!

How did you spend the day after Christmas? I had to catch up on some paper-work, but at least I could do so in my PJs, while drinking hot cocoa and eating sugar-cookies. The tastes and smells of holiday treats helped me finish the tasks.  All of our senses feel heightened during the holidays, which may be why so many are over-stimulated (and over emotional) during the festivities.  You’d think the day after would be a loud and exciting event of playing with all our new toys, yet my boys are quietly playing an old video game and my husband is reading a book, while I type.  I’ll enjoy this calm before the next storm!

“jack be nimble” game

Calm is needed after such a busy week – after such a busy month.  I don’t know about your house, but we have been on the go since Thanksgiving and all our adventures have been over-stimulating.  Even evening drives to see Christmas lights can be overwhelming with sensory-sensitive kids.  We use all our senses day and night during the holidays.  In light and dark we enjoy the sights and sounds of Christmas and winter rolling in.  This week we investigated light and dark at Adventure Academy, using Mother Goose Time’s Winter curriculum.  We explored the need for times of light and dark, and safety during those times, starting with “candle” day, followed by “star” day.

Each theme is separated into sub-themes by Mother Goose Time and each theme is filled with ways to explore the topic using your senses through music, stories, crafts, experiments, recipes and learning games.  Even though it was Christmas week the children still learned many basic skills and concepts through language, social studies, science, math… One child challenged the others to go home at night and count the stars after our star day activities.  After learning about candles and stars and playing with lanterns and lights we played with shadow concepts. There were many concepts and subjects learned through shadows.  Moving lights to change sizes and shapes, and discovering why we don’t need to be afraid of the shadows we see in the dark.

Winter days get shorter and nights get longer = lessons on time frames and solstice seriation.  Lessons don’t stop during holidays, but they did get more fun as we added in Christmas party activities and treats.  Decorating sugar cookies and making graham cracker – ginger bread homes = science and math; eating the treats while reading the gingerbread boy = language.  Who says holidays aren’t filled with opportunities to learn.  While many teachers discuss their students inattention during the excitement, I’d say my students were even more attentive.  If your students are distracted by the holidays use the holidays as a theme to gain interest in lessons.

If your children are interested in animals – use animals as a theme.  You can teach all subjects in 1 captivating unit instead of rebuilding interest per lesson.  If developing unit studies seems complicated I recommend trying Mother Goose Time.  I use it with 1-10 year olds in various ways by simplifying and expanding the activities.  Next month we are “Going on Safari,” which all the children will enjoy, and which will help me think of warm regions instead of the winter month we’ll be surviving.  If you’d like to start the new year on a Safari CLICK HERE.  If you’d like to learn about other curriculums we use at Adventure Academy email Christi@MiFamilies.com.  If you’d like your child to join in our learning adventures we have some part time spaces available.  If you’d like to network with us, other providers or parents, find us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube… If you’d like to read what Adventure Academy is up to each week please subscribe up towards the right of this page.  Adventure Academy is just one of the programs Mi Families facilitates for children.  Mi Families also provides programming for parents and providers.  CLICK HERE for more information on Mi Families.  Thank you.

Rainy days and snow days kept us inside too much this week.  Snow should never keep us indoors, but sometimes proper weather gear is forgotten during the weather changes.  We’re wondering if winter weather is here to stay as we turn up the heat and enjoy hot cocoa. This week we continued to prep for winter and Christmas, and it was a good thing Mother Goose Time provided us with many active indoor activities for the days we were stuck inside.

Mother Goose Time is one of the fun curriculums the children enjoy at Adventure Academy.  This weeks theme was “Sights and Sounds Found Indoors” and we spent many moments playing instruments, singing holiday songs and dancing to the the winter – Dance ‘n Beats DVD.  We also enjoyed calm activities learning basic social studies, science, language and math skills. It’s amazing how many skills were strengthened during day 1 – through baking cookies, making cookie crafts and exploring cookie shapes.  The next day we painted teapots with tea leaf colorings and enjoyed a tea party making tea sandwiches.

MGT – inviting friends math play

We discussed inviting others over for tea parties, Christmas parties, and play dates and practiced ways we would entertain our guests.  One house guest we wouldn’t want to invite is mice, but funny enough we were able to observe a family of mice trying to get inside through the window-well on “Mouse” day.  Mouse day was spent reading mouse-tales and playing mouse-math games. Real-life mouse observations led back to past discussions of animal adaptation, migration and hibernation.

Sewing 2 stockings created pocket for candy cane treats – MGT

We practiced being as quiet as a mouse, and as still as a mouse, after reading the line “not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” Then made our stockings to hang “by the chimney with care.” All of our cutout templates from the stockings back to cookie craft cutouts were reused as stencils and all our daily themes led to extended activities such as building warm shelters for people and animals, and decorating shelters for the holidays.  All of our 1-10 year old students enjoyed this weeks lessons and are excited for next weeks activities exploring light and dark – and getting ready for Christmas break!

Winter sounds like…

12360239_10156372944935381_3206639706804924575_n

weird weather in december = no snowpants

“Winter sounds like wind.”  “Winter sounds like Christmas songs.” “It is not ‘beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ though.” This is how the conversation led into “What happened to the snow?” “Is it spring now?” “Listen to the birds!” Listen to the kids observations.  They see and hear so much more than adults.  Many adults are posting thankful thoughts for the weirdly-warm-weather, while kids are questioning how it affects the reason for the season (beyond holidays).  Kids are noticing it will affect even next years crops, which will affect us and the animals food supply.  Although it’s nice to see a deer eating in the yard one child asked if that meant the bears are still out eating too, instead of sleeping.  The weather affects all living things and the cycle of life.

“1st snow” bk and craft (through mud, water, grass & snow)

This week at Adventure Academy the children enjoyed a unit on the “Sights & Sounds Found Outdoors” from Mother Goose Time.  The week started with animal tracking and exploring muddy animal tracks instead of snow tracks as intended.  The children were engaged during outdoor adventures, board games and creating reindeer headbands.  Inside and outdoors there were many discussions showing how observant the children are about animals, nature and the changing of seasons.

ice dropping (then shook to make ice drips)

We observed how rain water froze at night when temps dropped, then melted during the day – and used the water and ice for science related activities.  Such activities led into discussions of how important water is and the pros and cons of the weather changes for people and animals.  We talked about the ways animals use migration, hibernation and adaptation during the weather changes.  We talked about animals that might enjoy the winter weather more and nocturnal animals that enjoy the fact that days are shorter and nights are longer… Such as owls. Owl day gave lots of opportunity for building basic skills while using our senses to hunt for shapes and colors.

whoooo

We continued to use our senses all week long, but like last week the main sense was using our ears to hear the sounds of winter.  From animal sounds to music sounds we worked on quieting our own sounds to listen to the world around us.  We listened to the different sounds of different instruments and the different voices birds make.  We played “winter charades” using sounds with actions and acted out stories about animals and musicians. Our days continue to be filled with noise, but if adults listen to the noise of the children they will hear that it is the noise of playing out what the students are learning.  Some adults will be stopping in to observe the children learning through play this week, as Adventure Academy continues to model a developmentally appropriate program.  Although our program has no current full time openings there are still a couple part time spaces available if you’d like your child to join the adventure.

Throughout the week we had a dozen toddlers to ten-year-olds visit Adventure Academy.  Monday, Wednesday, Fridays have become a day of all age ranges, where Tuesdays are tots only and Thursdays are elementary ages.  This makes lesson planning interesting when your trying to make sure all children get the benefits of all curriculums offered.  One of the curriculums we utilize is Mother Goose Time.  All ages were excited to open this months “Sights and Sounds of Winter” box and predict what activities would be included.  Many students guessed instruments would be included in the unit.

Instruments are a fun topic during the holiday season as we immerse ourselves into Christmas music and songs about snow – which seems to have melted across most of the area! The excitement for the season is not melting with the snow – it’s only growing with energy and jingle bells. Jingle bells, cymbals, drums…  We found the pattern in different beats playing along with holiday favorites and making our own music.
