The power of pretend

Halloween treats led to lessons about healthy “foods from the farm” and the work of farmers, chefs, dentists and doctors to keep us healthy.  Health-ful occupations led to help-ful occupations and jobs of the hero’s that help keep us safe.  Children are curious about the roles of community helpers and gain a sense of security while playing out such roles.

“I spy” mgt poster game

Playing out professions is one reason I leave out “Halloween” costumes year round at Adventure Academy.  Not only can children play out roles they are curious about, but they can “pretend” they are in control of the world around them. Especially during times of chaos children seek out ways to make sense of the world they hear about through the news on TV’s, over the radio, and from peoples discussions.

Fire safety “get out and stay out” lesson

Kids are listening to adult conversations and even seeing images online that can be confusing and frightening.  Often roles of soldiers, police offers, firemen … and superhero’s make appearances in their play. Sometimes they will play the role of the “enemy” in order to sort out their feelings.

Sometimes it is helpful to step back and simply observe their play and ask questions later.  Sometimes it’s helpful to join in their play, but still allow them to be leading the adventure.  Adventures in learning are not always in books, sometimes they are real life adventures.

Adventure Academy believes in learning through educational and recreational adventures.  Onsite and out in the community students explore the world around them and meet others – such as community helpers.  Our older tutor-time students (“elementary explorers”) visited a college this week to talk about classes needed for different careers.

Our younger early-education students in our “Discovery Daycare” learned through play and make-believe, and with the help of the “community helpers” curriculum through Mother Goose Time.  Mother Goose Time’s activities are enjoyed by all in our multi-age programs.

Adventure Academy is just one of the programs offered from Mi Families (“my families”) LLC.  Adventure Academy is an child care and tutoring center in a home based environment, which focuses on teaching through children’s strengths and interests.  Make believe adventures are a great teaching tool.

Make believe adventures can help us teach beyond basic school-readiness skills and help children find their gifts and talents.  Make believe adventures can help encourage students to use their abilities to help serve others as “community helpers.”

Roll playing community helpers can help teach nutrition, health and safety… Playing dress up builds on motor skills, language and communication…. Life skills are often more important then academic skills.  I know some adults who’d benefit from learning communication skills!

Fall is flying by.  October is over and with it the Halloween hustle for candy.  Many homes still report an abundance of candy and parents debate letting kids eat at their own will or distributing it slowly or trashing it or donating it … Most parent’s know they don’t want too much candy in the house – maybe because they fear they’ll be the one to finish it off! Most kids know it’s not the healthiest treat to choose – but some argue fruit flavored candy isn’t as bad!

The kids at Adventure Academy started off the week talking about their Halloween candy vs last weeks lesson about the farmer’s harvest.  We talked about the food groups and what foods help us grow healthy and strong.  We learned about the farmer selling his fruits and veggies, his milk and eggs, the meat from animals… We learned how food goes from the farm to the store to the table and through our bodies.

We talked about the jobs of bakers and chefs and explored the tools in the kitchen.  Although the bakers job is quite fun, he/she may not be a professional focused on keeping us healthy.  We talked about dentists and doctors and ways they help keep us healthy.  We talked about what helps us grow healthy and strong, besides the foods we choose to eat.

At Adventure Academy we spend a lot of time on adventures – on field trips, indoors and outside.  Adventures help us grow healthy and strong and smart!  When on adventures kids often play pretend adding to their knowledge of different roles.  Farm adventures led to roles of the farmer and animals., Halloween adventures led to roles of superheroes and princesses…

This month we’re starting adventures in occupations.  This week we learned about roles of those who work in stores and restaurants and doctor and dentist offices and how these people can help us stay healthy.  Playing out the roles extended our knowledge of health and safety, it built on our social skills, it helped us work on our language skills.

Because our program is a multi age learning atmosphere little ones will explore materials based on a theme while middle students learn to identify different jobs, and older students research possible future careers.  The focus on careers is not to encourage money makers but to encourage ones use of their interest, strengths and talents.

Adventure Academy is a stage before age focused program where we learn and grow at our own speeds and in our own directions. We are now accepting enrollment for 2017 if you know a child near Kingsley, Mi who’d like to join in our Adventures.

This month we have been focusing on Language development.  From speech to reading to writing we’ve focused on building a love for literature. Literature is beyond a school readiness skill.  Reading and writing are skills that will not only help you succeed in the real world – but can help you escape the real world!

As we prepare for Halloween the children have been asking a lot of questions about the real world vs pretend.  Although Halloween is a fun time for make believe adventures, it’s a time many children learn to face fears and decipher what is “real.” Adventure Academy encourages both make believe and real adventures.

Adventure Academy is one of the programs through Mi Families (“my families”).  Mi Families provides educational and recreational resources for families and those who work with families.  Adventure Academy is our developmental child care and tutoring program for infants through pre-teens. Recently our adventures in learning have had a “Fall on the Farm” theme.

We’ve had field trips to dairy farms, apple farms, pumpkin farms… and when not out on an adventure we’ve created our own adventures at our home-based-center.  We’ve explored the world of farming in the fall using our senses.  We’ve created an “invitation to play” with hands on materials.  Many of our props came from the Mother Goose Time farm-kit.

Mother Goose Time is one of the curriculums our students enjoy.  MGT provides theme based learning materials and supplies for “invitation to create” art experiences.  While our younger students explore the supplies, our middle students and use them for story telling, and our older students use them for further research.

Our older students are encouraged to engage in play with their younger peers then pick a topic (such as produce, or farm machinery, etc…) to research then write about.  Middle students often ask for help writing down the stories they create from their open-play. The youngest students are learning words associated with the materials.

From learning how to use sounds, to identifying words that go with objects, to using words to tell or read a story … Children learn to love literature.  The power of our multi-age classroom is seen when a little one asks an older child to read to them and the older child shines with confidence and shares extended knowledge on the stories topic.

Our multi-age classroom is a stage before age program that encourages developmental steps without forcing ones direction.  Each child develops at a different rate and in different directions.  Focusing on their strengths and interests fosters a lifetime of “loving learning”.  Learning to love education opens doors for future occupations that sometimes closes on students when the focus is only on school readiness skills.

So many are in a race. An academic race for their child, their school, or their state to win scholarly awards.  Often people think this means to start children’s studies early on – and they are right – sort of.  However, here’s the thing – most students reach similar levels at similar ages despite when they start.  It’s kinda like the car that passes you then ends up at the same stop light! Some kids race through certain subjects, only to get stuck on different subject roads.  Some kids need fast and intense early intervention to reach developmental milestones, while other kids need less pressure and a slower pace to build confidence. Each student learns on different time tables and needs learning styles to thrive, but it’s hard to individualize classrooms with many children.

I’m not going to spend time debating classroom size today (although Adventure Academy’s low ratio’s are a benefit to our program).  I’m not going to debate America’s need for both parents to work, while kids are dropped off at daycare centers (although Adventure Academy’s center/home mix makes a comfortable transition for families).  I’m not going to debate the fact that countries like Finland are winning the race, while starting students at older ages (although Adventure Academy’s multi-age approach encourages without pushing beyond age/abilities).  I will debate, however that education can be fun.  That if you have to start early and feel the need to race – enjoy the race as a fun sport, not in competition to beat out peers.

EVERYONE has areas of strengths they can beat others in and EVERYONE has areas of struggle that they need assistance in.  Areas of struggle can be academic, mental, physical, medical… Instead of focusing on the hardships, ask who can they partner with to encourage those areas while fostering their strengths, and let them use their areas of strength to encourage others struggles. Instead of an individual race “to the top” – focus on teamwork. Turn your class into a team and play games to learn new skills.  From the core subjects of reading, writing and math – to the extras of social studies, sciences, art, music, sports, etc … actually use those extras to teach the core subjects.  Use what they are interest in to learn the 3R’s.

Right now our classroom is interested in fall studies.  We’re learning about the changing of the season, the changing and falling of leaves, the falling of apples, the harvest of fruits and veggies, the work of a farmer, the animals on a farm, wild animals preparing for winter… We’re using our fall studies to work on our core subjects while diving deeper into the fall lessons using various theme based curriculums.  One curriculum we’re enjoying is a farm theme from Mother Goose Time.  The convenient thing about MGT is that you can use their theme studies in whatever order you want – even whatever month you want since the calendars, etc are not pre dated.  Each lesson is pre packaged per day for ease of use – but it’s also easy to use days out of order or pieces from each day’s lesson.

This week we transitioned from pets in our home (after finishing our family studies) and talked about how cats and dogs can be pets or farm animals, then discussed which animals can only really live on a farm… as a cow in our home is not easy to manage! We talked about how to manage animals and care for them and what they need for food (and how wild animals don’t need our help for food).  We talked about how each farm animal is used on the farm and how each animal is special and unique – just like us! Cows are great at providing us with milk and meat – but would be horrible at laying eggs according to the students! “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing that it is stupid (according to Einstein).”

No one is “stupid.”  Everyone has things areas of struggle and area’s of strength and if we focus on the strengths we can build up areas of struggle.  If we focus on what a child is interested in, curious about, and what they enjoy doing we can teach them any subject.  Many children find math to be intimidating, but love playing games.  Since many games have a math focus use games and don’t call it math homework, call it Monopoly time, or whatever game they enjoy.  Many kids have labeled reasons they find math, reading and writing to be difficult.  Dyscalculia, dyslexia and dysgraphia are real obstacles, but they don’t prevent one from learning such skills.  I was told years ago my son would never read, but today he reads. Every day he has to work on such areas, but he reads!

Sensory activities are a great way to teach basic skills through hands on fun.  Playing with number or letter games teaches many skills, so does playing with rocks and corn and hay and grain … We’ve been using our “Fall on the Farm” unit to explore the farm world with our senses.  Cooking with fresh farm products teaches many skills from reading to math to sciences … We can also simply count out found materials, or use them to create patterns, or measure and weigh objects, or write words with found objects. Write the letter of the week in a tin of flour, build your spelling list from words found in a book about farming, visit a farm and feed and pet the animals then write about the field trip… There are so many ways to learn without a text book and paper.

There are so many ways to teach a group with diverse needs and diverse ages … while little ones mimic the sounds of the animals and middle ones identify a picture of the animal with the matching word, bigger ones can research and teach them about their favorite farm animal.  Next week we’ll continue learning about “Fall on the Farm.” Our fall sessions are full at this time, but we’ll have more fun units starting this winter if you know a child near Kingsley, Michigan who’d like to join in our learning adventures. Adventure Academy is one of Mi Families (“my families”) programs.  Mi Families facilitates programs for families and those who work with families across Michigan and across social media.  Find us online for more info and subscribe above for more articles! Thanks for reading this one

my A,B,C’s

Last month we focused on our friends and families and how we impact them and how they influence us. Although we talked about others – it was a pretty egocentric focus re-titled as “All about ME.” However the me focus always came back to how we individually affect each other.  Therefore, our back 2 school ABC lesson was “Always Be Caring.” Always Be Caring to everyone and everything. We talked about ways to care for ourselves, our family members, even animals – which transitioned nicely in to our “Fall on the Farm” theme.

We transitioned from pets in our homes, to the animals on the farm down the road.  We separated animals into categories of pet, farm or wild.  We separated wild animals into where they lived around the world.  We talked about how animals around the world use adaptation, migration and hibernation to survived the lands and weather changes.  As weather changes around northern Michigan we observed birds flying south and learned about how farm animals prepare for the cold weather.

We read books on animals and re used some of our A-Zoo knowledge from a past Mother Goose Time curriculum.  We found an animal for each letter of the alphabet and started learning about letter shapes.  Last week we used lines and curves for shape art – which transitioned nicely into how each letter uses lines and curves.  A = lines, B = both, C = curve … C = Cat, Chicken, Cow. We worked on using the letter C.  For each letter we work on making the speech sound(s), then sounding out words with such sounds and matching those words to objects (example C is for Cow * cow figures, cow pictures, cow projects).

After a speech focused use of the letter we work on identifying the letter.  Our little ones might match same letters while middle students match upper and lower case letters and oldest students work on cursive.  After letter recognition we work on word-work finding words using the letter in initial, mid or ending sounds.  We play build-a-word games labeling images or working on spelling skills.  We define and rhyme with the words, work on syllables, parts of speech, etc depending on age – then use the words to build sentences and finally stories.

Sometimes we read stories featuring our letter of the day – sometimes we write them.   Sometimes they are fiction, sometimes fact, sometimes serious, sometimes funny – sometimes a little of all reading/writing styles.  Sometimes we take the book provided from Mother Goose Time and add to the tale – or use it to continue building on lessons.  This months book about having a cow inside the house has a been a hit and yesterday it led to discussions of animal vs people habitats – which led back to our line and curve shape studies.

We built forts indoor and outdoors – big and small – discussing habitats and homes.  We observed animals in the wild and followed ants to their mounds.  We found gofer mounds and compared the two.  We visited a farm and compared man made structures to animal made ones.  Field trips are a big part of Adventure Academy for our older students.  Our older tutor-time students venture off our home-based center for various adventures throughout the community.  Some say that’s their favorite part of the program – others say they love that they get to be helpers when on site with the little ones.

Adventure Academy is a multi-age program for infants through pre-teens.  Some days are dedicated to a specific age range for developmental focus – other days there are a wide variety of ages and stages working and playing together.  Indoors and outside it’s amazing to watch older students build confidence teaching younger kids and the younger ones being encouraged to try new skills. Our programs are stage based instead of age based so there is no race, but rather encouragement.

Communication

Septembers focus was “me, my family and friends” at Adventure Academy.  We talked about ourselves, those closest to us, discussed extended family members, learned about stranger danger, talked about bullies … We learned how behaviors affect relationships and how emotions influence behaviors.  We used curriculums like Mother Goose Time to build on the lessons.  Octobers theme is “Fall on the Farm,” but we haven’t started the activities yet as the students were still engaged in the relationship activities.  We’ll transition to our farm theme learning about relationships with animals next week.

While planning that transition a student commented on how one should be kind to all living things. This led to a discussion of the weather changes and trees “dying” in the fall.  Obviously people and our pets and other animals are alive – “but are trees? Why should we care about trees? How can we take care of trees? How can kids help take care of things?” Listening to the students ask and answer such questions helps you see their world.  Letting them lead the discussion helps them feel empowered and important.

Every student in our multi-age child care and tutoring programs is important.  Every student comes with their own strengths and talents to share.  Every student is there to encourage each other and “help take care of things” in our one-room-school-house.  Every student has a say on how they help and what they want to learn about.  The classroom goals are individualized – yet we work as a team, as a family, to reach them.  We work together by communicating our wants and needs and understand that everyone has wants and needs.

Communication is the key to any programs success, but some programs have very small children or special needs students with limited speech.  This concept led to discussions about ways we can communicate without words.  From reading/writing to sign language to observing each others mannerisms and expressions.  When one expresses their emotions they tell us what they are feeling. Learning how to read feelings can help us understand their behaviors. One of this weeks classroom games included feeling-charades.

Expressing feelings is important for one’s mental health and having empathy for others emotions encourages a peaceful community.  During a training we facilitated providers discussed the concern for children – especially those on the spectrum – not understanding emotions and we learned more trainings are still needed on that subject.  Some people have a harder time understanding / reading emotions – and need to be taught cues – but most do understand – even those on the spectrum.

Actually many on the spectrum do understand and they feel strongly for others, but sometimes have trouble verbalizing the feelings or knowing how to respond.  Sometimes these individuals feel stronger than most, just as other senses may be heightened, and show their understanding in different ways.  Take time this week to observe individuals feelings and how they communicate.  When they speak – truly listen (not to answer, but to just listen) – and watch their mannerism and expressions.

Ask yourself how others feelings are influencing their behaviors. Ask yourself how your own expressions affect your own behaviors.  How are people perceiving you? What are you teaching young people about expressing thoughts and feelings? Teaching how to communicate wants and needs is a lesson we all need to review in our homes and out in the community.  How we communicate with others – with animals – with all living things – with all things matter. Are you being kind to everything?

me & my community

Some of my students are interested “in a galaxy far far away.” The make-believe world of Star Wars is being watched and played out by this next generation and it awesome how much they learn about society and communities from such mythical lands. Children are more aware of the chaos across our land and the globe then we’d like them to be, and they relate real life issues to the drama in fictitious worlds. They see the fight of good vs evil and the keys to a peaceful community.

What are the keys to a peaceful community? What are the keys to a lasting friendship? What are the keys to a loving family? What are the keys to loving oneself and having inner peace? As we continue learning about “me, my family and my friends” at Adventure Academy, we read books about character and work together on projects and play together in our classroom and outdoors.  We talk about how our behavior affects reaching our personal goals and how it affects our relationships with others.

Whether interacting with one other person or a large group we need to be aware of our behaviors, our expressions, our emotions … and the emotions of those we’re interacting with. Being able to read emotions and feelings can help us solve or even avoid a conflict.  This week we made a book entitled “our friends and our feelings” with pictures of the students pretending to feel various emotions.  We talked about reasons we feel different emotions and how to handle such feelings and help others in time of need.

Sometimes misunderstandings lead to fights between friends.  Sometimes we can understand why someone may act like a bully when we understand where their behaviors and feelings are coming from.  We can’t avoid all conflicts.  Friends will fight and the world will have wars.  However, we can teach our children how to try and avoid conflicts and how to try and solve conflicts. I’ve met many who have decided to homeschool their children to try and avoid bully situations, but I say instead of avoiding teach kids how to handle bullies.

Just because my boys are homeschooled, doesn’t mean they don’t interact with others and aren’t bullied.  In fact because of some of their challenges, such as language delays, they often encounter teasing and other mean behaviors from “friends.” The difference is I’m usually around to help them find their courage to stand up for themselves – and if I see them on the “mean” side I can help them redirect their behaviors and see how the other side feels.  I am not always around (and shouldn’t be) so I just pray the lessons stick.

I also pray lessons of caring, being helpful and encouraging also stick when they interact with others.  I express pride when I see them work together and cooperate with others – especially the students that visit our home for child care or tutoring sessions  This week one of our character lessons was about sharing. To go with our seasonal theme we read a book about Johnny Appleseed sharing his appleseeds.  We learned about apples and other fruit that grows on trees while working on our family and friend trees.

Making Friends

I’ve been asked to write about “social stuff.” Most people count “social stuff” as making friends, and at “Adventure Academy” we make friends when we make a mess and make believe together.  Infants to pre-teens play together and learn together in our multi-age classroom and on field trips out in the community.  We learn that our community is not all same-aged-peers with similar interests and abilities, but that we can befriend those who have differences and learn from each other. We learn that even during times of chaos, when the news wants us to see great division between people, there are many who want to work together for peace and friendship and all that other positive “social stuff.”

14344944_10157550638705381_3977610238048764670_n

14368694_10157550638850381_604570979602556334_n

The “social stuff” is always concerning to people when they find out our children are homeschooled.  It was a concern for us when we were considered pulling them out of their classroom settings.  Luckily we found we live in an area with many homeschool families who are into “social stuff.”  We meet up for playdates, co-op classes, field trips … In the typical classroom settings peers change each year as they are bumped into different classes – one awesome part about homeschool groups is that kids get to know each other for years – whole families become life-long friends! Also, our friends aren’t just ones from homeschool.  Often social networks are limited to a school or group you associate with – luckily we’re able to associate with many groups and have many networks.

From homeschool groups, to church groups, to extra curricular sports and other activities, our kids social skills have honestly improved with homeschooling – and with helping me build Adventure Academy.  Adventure Academy was their idea.  I tutored and ran a child care from home before (and was the director of a large child care outside of the home, and a teacher in classrooms, and a counselor in homes and residential treatment facilities, and…), we figured it was a great way to make even more friends! Having younger students around older students encourages peaceful playtimes and builds confidence by teaching each other.  Students share their talents and interests and encourage each other to try new skill sets.

In our communities, even in our homes, members do not have all the same skill sets and are not all the same age.  Many traditionally schooled people admit it is a challenge to socialize when they go into the work force with different people.  The work force, college, even our families are made up of people with differences. Our classroom members become a family who learn how to work together to reach goals.  With new members we often have to review goals of how to share toys and get along with each other. Having clear expectations through three simple rules help: Do not hurt people.  Do not hurt things.  Do have fun.  Understanding what is expected and when things are expected helps. Having a simple routine and daily structure also helps.

Basically we eat breakfast, play then learn, then eat lunch and rest… then eat snack and play and learn some more… and if we have questions along the way – we ask. Some of our members have special needs, which include speech challenges so we work on finding ways to ask – even if we don’t have the words. Each month we have vocabulary words we are working on.  This month we are working on words associated with “me, my family and my friends.” Younger students simply learn the words, middle students learn to use them and older students define them and research deeper into their meanings.  This is the basic format for all our unit studies.  This week we’ll learn more about friends and families – as well as our emotions and expressions, and how they effect each other.

We’ll learn about character and how to have “friendly traits.”  We’ll learn to be friendly to the people and world around us.  As we transition into another season we learn to respect the changes the season brings and how to care for nature.  We watch as nature begins adaptation, hibernation and migration – and how the animals using such survival skills to work together. If you know a child who’d like to learn with us at Adventure Academy we have a couple tutor-time openings on Mondays for elementary age students and a couple preschool spots open on Thursdays.  We are otherwise full for this season, but you are welcome to sign up on our waiting list for future seasonal adventures with us.

All about ME

Adventure Academy is back in business after my maternity leave.  Old friends joined us last week and we’ll meet new friends this week. We’ll continue learning “all about me,” as well as learn about our friends and families.  Everyone who participates in Mi Families (“my families”) programs (such as Adventure Academy) is a part of our family tree.  We’ll be making a family/friend tree with photos in our center this week – if you’d like to stop by and check it out!

Every member of our family is important to the success of our programs.  Most programs are defined by the facilitator, but our programs are defined by the members.  Even the youngest members in Adventure Academy choose topics to learn about, jobs to help with and meals to eat.  Adventure Academy is an education through recreation program, where we encourage students to make decisions and build confidence in learning and self-growth.

Our last article mentioned our ample supply of learning materials.  The video showed how most materials were in easy access for children to reach and use on their own.  Children learn where each material is kept so they can help clean up afterwards.  Self direction is encouraged and children are praised for taking initiative and helping others.  The children are also encouraged to define their own learning goals.

Although we do many group activities, each lesson has individualized goals in mind.  Although we are stage before age focused, our goals follow a continuum of learning sequence, which is modeled throughout our multi-age classroom.  Those with less developmental skills are not pushed, but often strive to follow the lead of older students.  Older students are encouraged to model independence and resiliency.

Resiliency is the ability to recover and continue trying to conquer ones goals.  Often attempts to reach goals and learn new skills is stressful for children.  Just as an adult can get stressed during tasks at home or work, so do children.  School is a child’s work.  Play is a child’s work.  Play is a time to grow and learn how to self regulate.  Learning to regulate behaviors and control emotions is a tough lesson.

As we learn about ourselves, our families and our friends –  we learn how our behaviors affect others.  We learn how to understand others emotions and feelings.  Emotions and expressions are not often easy to understand, so while we make our classroom-family tree, we will also be working on a friends & feelings book this week.  We’ll be using Mother Goose Time‘s “me and my family” curriculum for many of our supplies.

Back 2 School

And just like that, the next school season has started. Every fall I find myself asking how summer flew by so quickly – but as we head into this next fall season I feel as if I completely skipped summer this year! Being on bed rest for most of it was not much fun, but at least I enjoyed lotsa cuddles with my new baby, and at least I had friends and family willing to take our big boys out on summer adventures. As we re-open Adventure Academy we plan out what adventures our family will take next summer and plan out adventures for our family and for our lil’ friends this fall.

Adventure Academy is the name of our child-care and tutoring program.  Mi Families LLC (“my families”) has various programs for families and those who work with families across the state, but due to the needs of my own family I’ve had to find more consultants for programs further away and focus more on this adventurous program within my home.  I’m proud to say it’s the highest rated child care around and we have the highest success rates with our tutoring curriculums.  We have limited full day and part time spaces left for our fall session so email Christi@MiFamilies.com if you know a student who’d like to join in our learning adventures!

We’re starting this session learning about ourselves, our family and our friends.  We use top rated curriculums, including Mother Goose Time, and set up our environment to support each sessions theme.  Indoors and outside our supplies are selected to encourage choices and and rotated to encourage trying new materials. Although supplies are rotated the layout remains the same to support the multi-age teaching format and encourage independence. Below is a video showcasing our 1-room-school-house.

Our library video needs to be updated,  but shows the plethora of books, games, manipulates and teaching materials we have ready to further our investigations into each theme and study unit.  Once upon a time it was my husbands office, but as our supplies and materials grew we found ourselves needing the space (and now the poor guy has no office!).  The students loved the idea of a library.  It is a quiet retreat from the busy playroom next door.  Sometimes you’ll find older students enjoying some alone time while reading on the couch, or playing a board game with a friend – where lil’ ones can’t get at the small pieces.

Although it is a multi-age classroom we make time for all age group activities and activities set aside for specific age ranges.  My sons (Alex 10 & Sam 8) love to help prepare for activities.  They love learning from students of higher skill levels and love teaching to those who are not yet at their level.  Adventure Academy focuses on stage, rather than age, and each student may be at a different level for each subject.  As students visited last week to meet us or reacquaint themselves with the environment they all seemed ready to start the new school year.

We’ve been preparing our schedule for the new term and learning about schedules and times.  We’ve been discussing the different ways the students will travel to our home, their home and other schools / programs they are in. We have been reviewing how to travel safely, about school safety and learning about CPR and First Aid.  Each summer Adventure Academy (& Mi Families) will host a full-family safety and emergency care class.  Email the address above to learn more about getting your family certified!
